For Earth Day I want to do something really special that EVERYONE can participate in - so this is a two part challenge.
Challenge #1- For all FL Homeschoolers Members - regardless of area - each child will design an environmentally friendly bag. They can either take a canvas bag premade and decorate it - or they can take old clothes (or new fabric) and make one completely from scratch. This would be a great way to recycle those old t-shirts that might be just a little to torn to donate - but still good enough to make a bag out of. To participate - the child needs to design or decorate a bag and parents need to submit a photograph of it no later than April 23rd to me. Each participant will receive via email a PDF certificate of participation form. Parents can then print this on card stock for framing - or just regular paper for their portfolios. I am in the process of working out some other prizes - but we will have to see based on interest.
Part 2 - Host an Earth's Day Party -
For this I was planning on having a local speaker come out to talk about the importance of recycling, and offer kids coloring books or similar items. We would also work on a craft at the event (decorating canvas bags would be a good idea) as well discuss ways to recycle and help the planet. For those who have an interest in having a speaker - you can contact me for ideas on how to get a free speaker at your event! This can also be done on a much simpler level - where children color the planet Earth, write an idea on how to celebrate Earth Day, and enjoy cupcakes and juice. Hosts can go as in depth or as easy as they like - as long as it sticks to the idea of Earth Day. That means - if you serve canned sodas or bottled water - you remember to collect them to recycle. No styrofoam cups people!! Hehee!
So who is interested???
